What security film does

3M Safety & Security films are thicker films applied to the interior of glass. When glass breaks, the film is designed to help hold fragments together, reducing scattering. Paired with an appropriate attachment system, filmed glass can be held in the frame longer. This can slow forced entry and reduce injury from broken glass.

What it does not do

Security film does not make glass unbreakable or hurricane-proof. It is not impact-rated glass and is not a substitute for shutters, impact windows or any storm protection required by code, insurers or associations. Our article on hurricane season and security film explains this in detail.

Where it makes sense

• Glass entry doors and sidelights.
• Ground-floor windows and sliders.
• Glass near stairs, pools or play areas where breakage risk exists.
• Storefronts and office entries.
